My name is Lauren Bidwell and this website is dedicated to my Girl Scout Gold Award Project, titled Racism in the Movies, which took place on August 17th-19th, 2015. Combating racism is an important issue to me because I see racist comments all over social media as well as in my own community, and this is just unacceptable. For my project, I displayed 3 films at my high school, South County High, (one film each night) portraying racism in multiple forms, and then hosted a brief discussion afterwards. Also, each attendee was given a brief survey at the end. The films that I showed were Remember the Titans, West Side Story, and Akeelah and the Bee. This website has synopsis’s of all of the films, all of the discussion questions I asked, and the survey results.
One of my reasons for creating this website is so that others can use my knowledge and experience to do a project like this on their own. Please check out the “Survey Responses” tab on this website to view some suggestions for other movies that can lead to a positive discussion on combating racism. Feel free to use any of my discussion questions (also on this website) or ideas. I’m very passionate about this project and I hope you are too!
